Oooh, I would love to go to Iceland and go hiking Siets!!!

And yes, you'd be my tour guide for sure!! Maybe we could have MG Army tour??

Is the hiking easy or hard??

BTW, it's Freeeeeezing here in Oz - coldest winter for 50 years or sommat - there is a FREEEEEEEZING wind - it's -1 degrees where I live - and our house is FREEZING - well the part where the bedrooms and PC are - it's the old bit and it's 102 years old so all the cold comes in the cracks!! The rest of the house is warm. I might sleep in the kitchen tonight!! Laughing

Re: Is there anybody out there?????

Post by sietske on 11th July 2008, 4:31 pm

hello!!

Okay Iīm about to bore you with my icelandic stories, as Iīm stuck at a dull busterminal in Reykjavik. They forgot to mention to the operator here, that I was arriving today so there was no key to the appartment waiting form me. I just have to wait 3 long hours and watch my luggage all the time while Iīm using the internet..

Fliss..the hikes are a seasy and as rough as you would like, theīs plenty to hike up here! So did you sleep in the kitchen?

Karen...the sun is out here all day thank goodness, the wind is chilly but than again, a perfectly clear sky!

so...the story of siets in iceland so far... I went to a place in the southcoast in Iceland called Hveragerði. Thereīs a lovely hotel nearby where I slept for 2 nights. Itīs part of the stable, and everything is horseminded (I slept on Hastens bed, and yes they are as good as they tell ( made of horsehair), the next day after I had a good rest I hiked in the area for 8 hours. I felt every mustle in my body afterwards but it was so worth it! I hiked my way up all the way to the mountains, and ended up in an area that is called Reykjadalur...which means smokey slope or soemthing like that. It was 22 degrees, and hat is hot for here and the hike was just perfect. There was a huge waterfall along the trail and futher in the mountains, the trail followed a small river ( just a little to wide to jump over it) and the water in that river was very clear, but hot! that is soooo strange! so imagine... a steamy river in the middle of a grassland full with mountainflowers...so pretty. At one point I had to cross the river, so ofcourse without shoes...it was like a very hot bath. It seemed that the temperature had rise up 10 degrees after the earthquake. well anyway after I had enough of the scenery the hot river and the horsprings and the mudholes ( they made funny noises that somethimes scared me) I went back. BTW.. because of the earthquake last may...lots of things are changing, there are loads of new mudpools and everything is very active. In 2000 there was a huge earthquake and that made the geysir working again and after that Mount Hekla erupted as well, they expect that to happen soon aswell. ( mt Hekla erupts every 5 to 10 years...so 8 years is very well on time)....just keep in mind that I had been up to the summit of mt Helka just the other day...brrrrr! that quite scared me. They still canīt predict an eruption, just half an hour before.
Anyway back to the hotel I had a very long chat with a lovely woman from Cheshire. We talked the night away ( wich is easily done, while the sun doesnt set...) we might travel together another time, we have a lot of the same interests.
anyway...I moved to a guesthouse as the hotel was fully booked, and that made me go to the place where a huge mudhole just appered out of the blue during the eruption, it was in my backyard...Itīs very fascinating to see such a things, but than again it frightens me very much. In the small town itself, there was hot steam coming out of pavement, out of gardens, everywhere you looked, and the huge crack was just 50 meters away from me. When I walked up there, there were new hot areaīs everywher, itīs strange to see the burned grass ( and the smell is horrifying!) can you imaging that out f the blue a hotspot appears under a few trees? They are dead now ofcourse, but it freaked me out! the trail I was walking on was actually hot! I just made my way out of there, thereīs nothing wrong with using some common sence...it made me realize what is just underneath me.
And than there are people who walk off the trails just to have a very close look in the mudpools....than again...where thereīs a lot of gass, thereīs a lot of air, so the surface youīre walking on is very fragile and thin.
Spoke to a gilf for a very long time that lived there, she sad it was very clever of me to get out of there. Sheīs so fed up with living with this, she wanted to move.

well so far so good, Iīm still here and I just have to wait another 1,5 hours, so Iīll manage.
Sorry if I bored you, but hey it gave me something to do Laughing

woohoo I made it to the apartment after an argue with the local agent, he wasnīt pleased to find out I was coming over today, instead of tomorrow....he wasnīt angry with me though but with the company that forgot to mention it...
anyway Iīm back in Reykjavik and >Iīll have to keep myself occupied until tomorrow afternoon. On sunday my groop will arrive and then Iīm on the road again, and than I wonīt have acces to internet for another two weeks, so I try to catch uo now.
itīs great to red all the things as Iīm very bored...
